Christian Counseling

You’ll Hedge Before You Tell Me Anything Else

Somebody finds me because the word “Christian” appears next to my name in the search results.

Then they sit down and hedge, telling me they can’t really say they’re Christian, only that they believe there’s a higher power.

Sometimes, it runs the other way, and somebody can quote me the verse without feeling a word of it.

You put that on the table early because you think it disqualifies you from sitting in front of me.

You Won’t Get Talked Out of What You Believe

I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong about it.

Correcting a person’s belief closes the door, and there’s not much left to talk about after that.

Your version of it comes in with you at the level it’s at, half-formed or borrowed from your grandmother or worn down to almost nothing.

You get to be exactly as sure as you are, out loud, in front of me.

Your Anxiety Is Still Anxiety, and Your Grief Is Still Grief

In the first session, you tell me what belongs in these hours: prayer, Scripture, conversation about where you are spiritually, or none of it.

Those lines will not be crossed.

Then we get after whatever brought you: the anxiety that starts before you’re all the way awake, the depression you’ve stopped mentioning, the transition nobody asked whether you wanted.

That’s counseling, and it’s the same counseling whether or not a Bible ever comes off the shelf.

You Can Ask Me What a Passage Means

My master’s is from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, so when a passage shows up in the hour, I know what it says and where it came from.

What you do with it is your decision, and I’ll give you my honest interpretation when you ask for it.

If something you believe is costing you, I’ll say so out loud, and I won’t hand you a replacement.

You can also come here for eight months and never raise any of it, and I won’t go looking for it.

You’ll Quit Explaining Yourself First

Somewhere in the first month or two, you’ll quit handing me the disclaimer about where you stand before you get to the point.

You’ll bring the actual problem in the first five minutes instead of the last ten.

The anxiety that used to start before you were awake will have a name and two or three things you do about it.

Whatever you believe at the end of this will be yours, and it won’t be because I steered you into it.

Find Out If I’m a Fit Before You Commit to Anything

Book the free consultation, and tell me what’s going on.

Tell me what you want faith to have to do with it, including having nothing to do with it.

If I’m not the counselor for this, you’ll hear it from me in that conversation instead of six weeks from now.

Sessions are online, anywhere you are in Tennessee or North Carolina.

Don’t Be Jason

Jason looked at the opportunity and decided it wasn’t worth checking out.

A complimentary consultation is where the two of us work out whether I’m the one who can help you.
